How to Pass the ServiceNow CSA Exam on Your First Attempt (2026 Guide)

The ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) exam is a 60-question, 90-minute test that covers everything from platform navigation and ITSM applications to CMDB, reporting, and access control.

Most candidates underestimate how broad it is. Here is how to prepare efficiently.

Understand the exam format first

The CSA exam:

• 60 questions in 90 minutes (about 90 seconds per question)
• Passing score: approximately 70%
• Available online (Pearson VUE) or at a test centre
• Questions are multiple choice — you pick from four options, so you need to eliminate wrong answers rather than recall facts from scratch

The most important implication: you need wide coverage, not deep knowledge in a few areas. One domain you skip could cost you five or six questions and the difference between passing and failing.

Map the domains before you start studying

ServiceNow publishes an official exam blueprint listing every topic area and its approximate weighting. Before you open a study guide, read through the blueprint and honestly rate your confidence on each topic from one to five.

Your study plan should weight time toward your weakest areas, not the ones you already know. The domains that appear most heavily on the exam tend to be:

• ITSM Applications — Incident, Problem, Change, and Request management
• Platform Navigation and UI — Forms, lists, filters, and the platform interface
• Database Administration — Tables, fields, relationships, and data management

Practice questions from day one — not documentation

The single most effective study method for the CSA is retrieval practice: answer questions, get them wrong, understand why, repeat. Reading documentation or watching videos alone rarely translates to exam performance because the exam tests specific terminology and edge-case platform behaviour.

Aim for at least 10 practice questions per day, spread across all domains. After two weeks of consistent practice you will have a clear picture of which domains are pulling your score down. Focus study there.

A good question bank will also expose you to the way ServiceNow frames answers — which matters. Two options often look equally correct until you recognise the ServiceNow-specific nuance that distinguishes them.

A realistic study timeline

For most candidates:

Candidates who fail usually fall into one of two groups: they studied too long and burned out on detail that does not appear on the exam, or they crammed for a week and ran out of time to cover all domains. Consistent daily practice over four to six weeks beats both approaches.

Three weeks before the exam: timed mock exams

Start running full 60-question timed mock exams at least three weeks before your exam date. These are critical for two reasons.

Time management. Ninety seconds per question sounds comfortable until you reach question 45 and realise you have been spending three minutes on uncertain questions. Practicing under time pressure removes that variable on exam day.

Confidence calibration. If you are hitting 75% or above on mocks consistently, you are ready. If you are under 65%, go back to the domains dragging your score down before booking the exam.

Review every wrong answer. Not just what the right answer was, but why it was right and why your answer was wrong. That distinction is where learning actually happens.

Common mistakes that cost candidates the pass

Skipping CMDB. It appears heavier on the exam than candidates expect. Discovery, CI classes, and relationship types are all fair game.

Ignoring Import Sets and Transform Maps. These feel like edge topics but appear reliably on the exam.

Treating ServiceNow as ITIL verbatim. ServiceNow has its own terminology and process implementations. When a question could go either way, favour the ServiceNow-specific answer over the generic ITIL answer.

Not practicing under time pressure. Running out of time and rushing the last 15 questions is one of the most common causes of failure.

Over-indexing on what you already know. It is tempting to spend time on topics you find interesting. The exam does not reward depth in one area if another area is a blind spot.

On exam day

• Flag questions you are uncertain about and come back to them. Do not spend four minutes on a single question.
• Read every answer option before selecting one. CSA questions often have two plausible-looking options where one word makes one of them wrong.
• Trust your first instinct on terminology and process questions. Second-guessing usually makes things worse.
• Arrive with energy. A well-rested brain eliminates wrong answers faster than an exhausted one that has been cramming the night before.
